Joe Ratterman
President and Chief Executive Officer
Based in Kansas CityJoe Ratterman is president and chief executive officer of BATS Global Markets, Inc. (BATS), one of the world’s largest securities market operators and the parent company of the BATS Exchanges, BATS Options and BATS Chi-X Europe. A market structure practitioner, he is a frequent panellist and presenter at industry conferences, and also opines on key topics, regulatory issues and other pertinent events via newsletters to the industry.
Under Mr. Ratterman's direction, BATS is focused on market quality, reliability, transparency and fairness while delivering a high standard of customer service. Since he was named CEO in June 2007, BATS has become the third-largest stock exchange operator in the U.S., and BATS Chi-X Europe has become the largest pan-European stock market. In 2012, the latter was recognized as "Best Stock Exchange" in Europe by Financial News.
Since 2008, Mr. Ratterman has been continuously ranked by Institutional Investor as an industry leader on the magazine’s "Tech 50" and "Online Finance 40" lists. In 2010, he was one of the four national finalists in the Financial Services category for the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year® award, celebrating the most influential and innovative entrepreneurs from around the globe. Also, BATS has repeatedly been recognized by the Kansas City Business Journal through the "Champions of Business" and "Best Places to Work" awards programs. In addition to its Kansas City headquarters, the company also has offices in London and New York.
One of 13 individuals who founded BATS in 2005, his previous industry experience includes time as chief technology officer at Bridge Information Systems and Reuters, where he was employed from 1990 to 2002.
An accomplished water skier, rock climber, professional photographer, and instrument-rated commercial pilot, Mr. Ratterman holds a degree in mathematics and computer science from Central Missouri State University, as well as Series 7, 24, 27, 55 and 66 licenses. He is also a member of the Angel Flight Central Board of Directors
Chris Isaacson
Senior Vice President, Chief Operating Officer
Based in Kansas CityChris Isaacson is a founding employee and was promoted to chief operating officer at BATS Global Markets in July 2007. He is also a senior vice president of the firm. Mr. Isaacson is responsible for ensuring BATS remains an innovative, world-class leader in technology and his leadership has helped BATS grow quickly.
Mr. Isaacson was previously vice president in charge of operations, a position he had held since 2006. He previously managed the trade desk at BATS and, as a developer, was instrumental in the architecture and implementation of the BATS trading platform. He speaks frequently on panels at key industry events. In 2012, Mr. Isaacson was recognized by Institutional Investor, ranking #12 on their "Trading Technology 30" list.

Mr. Isaacson began his career as a software engineer at Cerner Corp., the publicly traded, Kansas City-based healthcare information systems supplier. He was a software developer at Tradebot Systems from 2003 to 2005.
He holds a bachelor's degree in information systems with minors in math and finance from Nebraska Wesleyan University, Lincoln, Neb., and was a two-time Academic All-American while competing in the decathlon. He also earned a master's degree in business administration from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, where he currently serves on the Advisory Board at the Raikes School of Computer Science and Management.
Mr. Isaacson holds Series 4, 7, 24, 27, 55, 63 and 65 licenses.
Brian Schell
Senior Vice President, Chief Financial Officer, Treasurer
Based in Kansas CityBrian Schell joined BATS as chief financial officer in March 2011 and is also a senior vice president of the firm. Mr. Schell oversees all financial activities for the firm including accounting, finance, forecasting, strategic planning and deal analysis.
A 20-year veteran of the financial services industry, Mr. Schell spent 16 years at H&R Block Inc. where he held various senior leadership positions, concluding his tenure as senior vice president, operations, support and development for the firm’s Tax Services division. Mr. Schell also served separately as chief financial officer of the Tax Services and H&R Block Financial Advisors units, holding the former position for seven years.

During Mr. Schell's tenure at H&R Block, he led several merger and acquisition assignments, while directing financial operations and strategic planning initiatives that led to significant revenue growth and operational efficiencies. Most recently, Mr. Schell was chief financial officer at Pollen Inc., a Kansas City-based technology company working with large companies redeploying cash in their accounts payables.
Mr. Schell began his career as an analyst at JP Morgan & Co. in New York and also spent five years in Washington, D.C., at KPMG Peat Marwick and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, facilitating regulatory-assisted banking transactions.
Mr. Schell graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1987 with a bachelor's degree in business administration and an emphasis in finance. He also holds a master’s degree in business administration from The George Washington University.
Mr. Schell holds a Series 27 license.
Mark Hemsley
Chief Executive Officer, BATS Chi-X Europe
Based in LondonMark Hemsley is chief executive officer of BATS Chi-X Europe, operator of the largest pan-European equities market and the European arm of BATS Global Markets. Under his leadership, BATS Chi-X Europe and its predecessor company, BATS Europe, emerged as a European leader in market structure, technology and innovation.
After BATS Global Markets acquired Chi-X Europe in November 2011, Mr. Hemsley became CEO of the combined BATS Chi-X Europe organization. In the span of five months, he and his team launched the first full interoperable clearing service offered by a trading venue and successfully integrated the BATS Europe and Chi-X Europe MTFs, capped by the seamless move of Chi-X Europe’s trading books to BATS’ technology platform.

During his tenure at BATS, Mr. Hemsley and his team have received numerous awards, including the "Financial News 100 Most Influential" ranking in the top five in the market structure category. He also contributes his market structure expertise as a member of the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) Secondary Markets Standing Committee providing consultation on the impact of market structure changes and ESMA policy development.
Before joining BATS, Mr. Hemsley was managing director and chief information officer at LIFFE, running its Market Solutions group. At LIFFE from 2001-2004, he won major contracts with top exchanges and transformed the technology organization to capture greater revenue from its exchange businesses. A LIFFE board member, he was also heavily involved in the sale of LIFFE to Euronext, the predecessor company to NYSE Euronext.
Previously, Mr. Hemsley was a managing director of global technology — serving as chief operating officer and a CIO — during his tenure at Deutsche Bank GCI, the investment bank. With that company, he managed teams of professionals in Frankfurt, London, New York, Singapore, Sydney and Tokyo, while working closely with the firm's trading operations.
His previous positions included time as a vice president at Credit Suisse First Boston, where he was global head of foreign exchange technology, and a stint as CIO at Natwest Capital Markets.
Tami Schademann
Senior Vice President, Chief Regulatory Officer
Based in Kansas CityTami Schademann joined BATS as a founding employee in 2005 and has led the regulatory and compliance department since that time. She was named chief regulatory officer and senior vice president of BATS Global Markets in 2008.
Leading up to the 2006 launch of BATS Trading as a U.S. trading platform, Ms. Schademann played a central role in BATS' application with the National Association of Securities Dealers (now FINRA) to become a broker-dealer, as well as the firm's application with the SEC.
"Tami has successfully guided BATS through a number of SEC and FINRA compliance requirements, and is the ideal person to lead BATS as chief regulatory officer," CEO Joe Ratterman said. "She also showed exemplary leadership of our regulatory compliance team during BATS’ transition to a licensed U.S. securities exchange."
In 2010, Ms. Schademann was an Ingram’s Magazine "Women Executives" honoree, an accolade given to Kansas City women who exemplify leadership within their organizations.
Prior to joining BATS, Ms. Schademann was chief compliance officer for four years at Tradebot Systems. Previously, she was a manager at Security Investment Company of Kansas City as well as in the trust divisions of Firstar Bank, Commerce Bank, and Security Bank of Kansas City.
Ms. Schademann holds Series 7, 24 and 63 licenses.
Eric Swanson
Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary
Based in New YorkEric Swanson joined BATS Global Markets as general counsel in January 2008 and continues to lead the BATS legal team.
During his tenure at BATS, Mr. Swanson has played an integral role in helping BATS transition from an ECN to an Exchange and oversees all legal aspects at the company.
Mr. Swanson has a significant history with the SEC, having served at the Commission from 1996 to 2006 and rising to the title of Assistant Director in the Office of Compliance, Inspections and Examinations’ market oversight unit in Washington. His duties included supervising the Commission's inspection program responsible for regulatory oversight of trading on the securities exchanges and ECNs.
"Eric has made significant contributions to the BATS organization during and after obtaining regulatory approval to operate as an Exchange and as we expand into other asset classes and services," said CEO Joe Ratterman.
Mr. Swanson was most recently chief counsel and vice president of regulatory strategy at Ameriprise Financial. He graduated from the University of Minnesota and earned his law degree at Hamline University School of Law in St. Paul, Minn.
Ken Conklin
Senior Vice President, Global Head of Business Development and Marketing
Based in Kansas CityKen Conklin was promoted to senior vice president, business development, at BATS Global Markets in August 2007. Mr. Conklin was the driving force behind much of the company’s European expansion and spent two years in London focusing on the start-up of BATS Europe. He was also instrumental in the research and development for BATS Options and is spearheading BATS’ efforts to explore the Brazilian market.
Also, as head of global marketing, Mr. Conklin brings strong technical knowledge to the firm’s print and online material and is responsible for maintaining the BATS brand by ensuring consistent messages and branding across all media.
Mr. Conklin joined BATS as a founding employee in 2005 as a software developer and played a key role in the development of the BATS ECN. He has pioneered and led the sales and marketing efforts for BATS as an account manager, sales manager, and vice president of sales.
"In a technology-driven company such as BATS, it only makes sense that a technology professional should lead business development and marketing for the firm, and Ken has played an enormous role in BATS’ growth, first leading our U.S. sales force and then as the lead for our European expansion," CEO Joe Ratterman said.
Previous to joining BATS, Mr. Conklin was a software developer at Tradebot Systems. His experience also includes software engineering positions at Cerner Corp., Kansas City, Mo., and Cyntergy Technology, Tulsa, Okla. He spent the first several years of his career as a financial analyst and commercial lender for Bank of America and Firstar Bank (U.S. Bank).
Mr. Conklin holds a bachelor's degree in economics and business from Kansas State University and also earned a master's degree in computer science, with honors, from the University of Kansas.
Mr. Conklin holds Series 7, 63 and 24 licenses.
Jeromee Johnson
Vice President, Head of BATS Options
Based in Kansas CityJeromee Johnson leads the BATS Options market and regularly speaks at conferences and other industry events on key market structure topics.
Mr. Johnson joined BATS in March 2009 as vice president, market development, and, under his leadership, BATS Options launched in 2010. Since that time, BATS has been at the forefront of innovation in U.S. equity options with unique offerings such as “NBBO Setter” rebates and new risk management tools for traders. In February 2013, BATS Options posted its best market share month on record.
He was previously president of 3D Markets, where he was instrumental in designing and launching Archangel, the first dark pool trading network in U.S. equity options. Mr. Johnson was also a senior analyst at Tabb Group and director of product development and professional services at UNX.
Before joining BATS, Mr. Johnson authored seminal industry titles including "Locating the Invisible: Aggregating Dark Book Liquidity" and "Trading at Light Speed: Analyzing Low Latency Market Data Infrastructure."
Mr. Johnson is a graduate of The American Institute for Computer Sciences and currently resides in the Kansas City, Mo., area with his family.
Joe Bracco
Vice President, Head of U.S. Sales
Based in New YorkJoe Bracco was named vice president and head of U.S. sales for BATS Global Markets in December 2009. An industry veteran, Mr. Bracco joined BATS in February 2008 as director, U.S. sales, managing client accounts and all relationships related to the dissemination of BATS market data.
"Joe is an invaluable member of the BATS team having developed solid relationships with clients on the East Coast as a sales director and successfully working to have BATS market data published on high profile Web sites, such as Yahoo!Finance and AOL," said CEO Joe Ratterman. Prior to joining BATS, Mr. Bracco spent the bulk of his career at Cantor Fitzgerald LLP in New York. During his 22 years at Cantor, he became a partner and senior vice president and was responsible for building, managing and maintaining relationships with large primary dealers, hedge funds, futures trading accounts and regional dealers.
Mr. Bracco is a graduate of St. John’s University, New York, and holds Series 7, 24, 55 and 63 licenses.
Randy Williams
Vice President, Investor Relations and Communications
Based in New YorkRandy Williams was named vice president, communications, for BATS Global Markets in March 2008. He joined BATS in October 2006 as communications specialist.
Mr. Williams is responsible for much of BATS' interaction with external audiences, including journalists and analysts, and his work has led to coverage from Bloomberg, BusinessWeek, CNBC, Dow Jones Newswires, Forbes, Reuters, The Economist, The Financial Times, NEWSWEEK and The Wall Street Journal, among others.
"Randy has become one of the defining personalities for BATS and he is truly one of the easiest people to talk to that I know," said CEO Joe Ratterman. "His professionalism and communication with the press, analysts, and our customer base has helped BATS develop and maintain a great standing and professional image in the public eye."
Mr. Williams began his career as a journalist at Dow Jones Newswires in New York and spent 11 years there. From 1998 to 2004, he was assistant managing editor in charge of the spot news operation, supervising a group of more than 50 journalists and statisticians. In 2001, in honor of his work for the newswire Sept. 11, 2001, he received the Dow Jones Circle of Excellence Outstanding Service Award.
Prior to joining BATS, Mr. Williams was vice president with the global public relations consulting firm Fleishman-Hilliard, running the financial practice for its fourth-largest office in Kansas City and managing clients such as the National Stock Exchange, based in Chicago. He was at Starkman & Associates, New York, as senior managing director prior to moving to Kansas City in 2006.
A former offensive lineman at the University of Illinois and Lehigh University, Mr. Williams graduated from Lehigh with a bachelor's degree in journalism and a minor in public relations.
He holds Series 7, 24 and 66 licenses.
